News Release: 9/4/2024

Name: B.J. Olson owner of Unity Road

How many years have you been in business: We celebrated our 2 year anniversary 7/27/24. We were the First Licensed Dispensary to open in the State.

What motivates you: What drives me the most is my family. They inspire me daily to be the best version of myself in everything I do. I'm also highly motivated by challenges, especially when someone suggests something is impossible. I love proving that with the right mindset and determination, anything can be achieved.

If your business had a theme song, what would it be: If Unity Rd had a theme song, it could be "Three Little Birds" by Bob Marley. The song's positive message, laid-back vibe, and connection to well-being aligns well with our mission of providing a path to well-being in a calm and reassuring way. Plus, its association with relaxation, peace
and education complements our values.

As a business in Hartford, how does the Chamber help you: The Chamber has been an invaluable resource for both knowledge and networking within the community. It keeps me informed about the latest developments and opportunities from a business perspective, ensuring that I'm always connected to what's happening in Hartford.

Favorite aspect of being in Hartford: My favorite aspect of being in Hartford is the deep connection I have with this community. Hartford has been my home for 22 years—it's where I've raised my family and built lifelong friendships. This is my community, and I take great pride in ensuring that Unity Rd is a business the community can be proud of.

What does being a part of the Hartford Community mean to you? Being a part of the Hartford community means everything to me. It drives me to bring my best every single day because this isn't just where I do business—it's where I live and deeply value my reputation. I take immense pride in having a business in this community, and I'm committed to upholding the standards that make Hartford such a special place.

What’s an interesting or little know fact about your business you wished people knew: One interesting fact about our business that many might not realize is the diversity of our patrons—the average age is 46, and most visit us seeking relief from pain. I always tell them, “Cannabis doesn’t address the root cause of pain, but it helps
your body relax, which is essential for healing. When you're in pain, your muscles tense up, and it becomes harder to rest and recover. Cannabis allows you to relax and take your mind off the pain, which supports the recovery process.”

What advice would you give someone looking at opening a business in Hartford: Do it! Hartford is a great community and it is about ready to take things to another level with anticipated growth over the next several years.

When not at work, what is your favorite thing to do: I love fishing, hunting, golfing and just being with my family and friends.

What makes your business stand out: Unity Rd stands out because of our commitment to personalized care and community focus. We’re more than just a dispensary; we’re a part of the Hartford community.  Dedicated to helping our patrons find the right path to well-being. Our knowledgeable staff takes the time to understand each customer's unique needs, ensuring they receive the most appropriate products and guidance. Coupled with our strong emphasis on education and creating a welcoming environment, we aim to make every visit a positive and
supportive experience.

What do you see for the future of your business: The future of our business is closely tied to the upcoming vote in November on Adult Use for Cannabis. If approved, I see Unity Rd thriving in the community and achieving the great things we envisioned when Recreational Use was first passed in 2020 before being repealed. However, if it doesn't pass, the future of Unity Rd in Hartford becomes uncertain. The State’s
Medical Cannabis program has been so restrictive that the number of patients peaked at 14,000 but has since declined due to the challenges in obtaining a license and the high costs involved. We're hopeful for a positive outcome in November, and we would greatly appreciate your support.

What would you like to see the chamber do more: I'd love to see the Chamber in Hartford continue to expand its efforts in supporting local businesses through more networking events and collaborative initiatives. Creating additional opportunities for business owners to connect, share ideas, and work together would strengthen our community even further. Additionally, increased advocacy for business-friendly policies and initiatives that promote economic growth in Hartford would be incredibly
beneficial.
