Dog Waste Stations Ribbon Cutting

Pet Waste Stations Ribbon Cutting
to be held on Saturday, April 21, in Hartford
—Pet owners encouraged to ‘Bring Your Own Dog’ to event—

What:  Dedication and Ribbon Cutting of the five new Pet Waste Stations available for use along the Hartford Bike Trails and City Parks. Local Cadette Girl Scout Troop 50087 is hosting this B.Y.O.D. (Bring Your Own Dog) in conjunction with the Ribbon Cutting to encourage area pet owners to dispose of pet waste as part of their Silver Award project.

When:  Saturday, April 21, 1:00 p.m.

Where:  Near the big bridge in Turtle Creek Park, Hartford, S.D.
The troop identified this community need as part of their Silver Award project by listening to complaints by area residents who noticed dog waste along the trail and community members who were not taking the time to clean up their pet’s waste. It is important for waste to be cleaned up for the following reasons:

  • EPA deemed dog waste a “non-point source of pollution” in 1991, putting dog waste in the same category as oil and toxic chemicals.
  • Dog waste is a major pollutant and contaminate of the water supply.
  • Dog waste adds up – The average dog can produce 274 pounds of waste per year.
  • Spread of disease – Can spread to other dogs, children, and adults.
  • Roundworms remain infectious in dog waste for years.
  • Cause excessive weed and algae growth.
  • Severe illness in humans.
Stations are located at the following sites:
  • Turtle Creek Park trail near the large bridge
  • New bike trail (south of the High school/Railroad Street)
  • Intersection of Colton Road & Highway 38
  • Michael Fitzmaurice Trail near Hartford Heights housing development
  • Hartford City Park
The troop thanks the following who provided financial support to make this project possible. The troop would also like to thank the Hartford City Council and Hartford Bike and Rec Trail Committee for approval and support of the project. Thank you also to the Hartford City staff who assisted with installation and will maintain the stations going forward.
